Exploring Cafe Oratnek with Luna: Rediscovering Our Hidden Gem in Redfern

Hey there,

Happy Australia Day! I'm sure many of you have grand plans for the day and are eagerly anticipating the extended weekend - I certainly am. At the time of composing this edition, we're contemplating a leisurely lunch at an Italian restaurant with Luna on Australia Day. I'll be sure to update you on whether it's worth a visit, should we decide to go. Without further ado, let's delve into this week's highlight, a place we're revisiting after more than six years, a time before Luna joined our family.

Let's dive in!

We arrived close to 1 pm, finding ample parking beside the cafe, as it's situated on the quieter, residential side of Redfern. The cafe, reminiscent of a townhouse, exudes a homely charm, perhaps a nod to its architectural design.

We waited approximately 10 minutes for a table, as indoor seating wasn't an option with our furry companions, and the outdoor area was fully occupied.

Fortunately, the sun was mild, making our outdoor dining experience quite pleasant. The cafe was teeming with customers, and many of their desserts were already sold out. A tip for the sweet-toothed: arrive early.

Ebi Omurice

Ebi Omurice

My wife opted for the Ebi Omurice, a Japanese classic. Essentially, it's tomato-infused rice topped with an omelette, to which she added prawns for extra protein. My single bite revealed a dish bursting with flavour - the rice rich and tangy from the tomato, perfectly complemented by the airy omelette.

Kobe Hayashi Rice

Kobe Hayashi Rice

I chose the Kobe Hayashi Rice, featuring wagyu beef in a unique sauce, oven-baked with cheese - I included a baked egg for good measure. The dish was exceptionally savoury, with the cheese adding a delightful richness. It reminded me of Hong Kong-style baked rice, but the Japanese sauce elevated it to a whole new level.

Quote of the week

When an eighty-five pound mammal licks your tears away, then tries to sit on your lap, it’s hard to feel sad.
